Once more there's a new library for writing applications on small devices. Android, from Google and the Open Handset Alliance, is a new OS and SDK for mobile devices (primarily for phones, by the look of the emulator).
It looks like it's built on a small Linux kernel, but, more importantly, all the functionality is accessible from a fairly full featured Java API. Depending on it's adoption, it could be a pretty serious contender for both J2ME, as well as BREW (mostly on Verizon devices).
Going forward, it might be useful to have a port of the J2ME application libraries to Android, in order to transition existing mobile apps. A good idea for a some enterprising[1] open-source developers...
[1] Wait, are open-source developers "enterprising"? Or is the sharing of the application and source code more of an artistic action? Perhaps a philosophical discussion will have to be made.
